Essaouira day trip from Marrakech
Essaouira is the relaxed side of Morocco: a walled medina on the Atlantic, blue fishing boats, sea breezes and the best grilled fish in the country. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it's easy to explore on foot.
How the day goes
Pick-up in Marrakech and drive west across the plains. On the way we stop at a women's argan oil cooperative, and in season you may see goats climbing the argan trees.
Arrive in Essaouira and walk the ramparts of the Skala with their old cannons, then the fishing port with its blue boats.
Choose your fish at the port grills, or eat at a café in the medina.
Free time in the medina's galleries, woodwork shops and spice stalls, or on the beach. Drive back to Marrakech in the late afternoon.

Questions
Is Essaouira worth a day trip?
Yes. Many travellers say it's their favourite day out of Marrakech. If you can, spend a night there, because it is lovely in the evening.
Is it cold in Essaouira?
It's always windier and cooler than Marrakech. Bring a light jacket, even in summer.
Can we see the goats in the argan trees?
Sometimes, mostly in spring and early summer when the trees have fruit. It's not guaranteed.
