6-Day Mediterranean Coast: Tangier, Tetouan and Al Hoceima
Most travellers never see Morocco's Mediterranean coast. It is the warmest sea in the country, with clear water, pine forests and small coves under the Rif mountains. You start in Tangier, where Africa looks across at Spain, then go to Tetouan, a white Andalusian medina listed by UNESCO. A spectacular road follows the cliffs east to Al Hoceima, where you have two nights to swim in the coves of the national park. On the way back you sleep in Asilah, a whitewashed town on the Atlantic.
Best for: Summer travellers and swimmers: the Mediterranean is the warmest sea in Morocco.
Highlights
- Tangier's Kasbah and the Cap Spartel lighthouse
- Tetouan's white medina, a UNESCO site
- The Rif coast road from Oued Laou to El Jebha
- Two nights by the clear coves of Al Hoceima
- Swimming in the warmest sea in Morocco
- Asilah's ramparts and painted walls
Day by day
Driving times are honest estimates for the time behind the wheel. Stops for photos, tea and lunch come on top, and you can always ask your driver to stop.
Day 1Arrival in Tangier, the Kasbah and Cap Spartel
Arrival in Tangier, the Kasbah and Cap Spartel
Your driver meets you at Tangier airport or the port. In the afternoon you walk through the Kasbah, then drive out to Cap Spartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, and the Caves of Hercules. Night in Tangier.
Day 2Tangier – Tetouan – M'diq
Tangier – Tetouan – M'diq
East to Tetouan, the white city at the foot of the Rif. Its medina, built by Andalusian refugees, is listed by UNESCO and still full of craftsmen. In the afternoon, down to the sea at M'diq, with the long sandy beaches of Cabo Negro. Night by the sea.
Day 3M'diq – Oued Laou – El Jebha – Al Hoceima
M'diq – Oued Laou – El Jebha – Al Hoceima
One of the most beautiful roads in Morocco: the coast road east along the Rif, between mountains and sea, through the fishing villages of Oued Laou and El Jebha. Stops for photos and a fish lunch on the way. In the evening you reach Al Hoceima, above its bay. Night by the sea.
Day 4Al Hoceima National Park and beaches
Al Hoceima National Park and beaches
A day for swimming. Your driver takes you to the coves of the Al Hoceima National Park, where cliffs drop into clear, calm water, and to the town beaches. Snorkel, take a boat along the coast, or simply rest.
Day 5Al Hoceima – Tetouan – Asilah
Al Hoceima – Tetouan – Asilah
Back west along the Rif and past Tetouan to the Atlantic at Asilah, a small whitewashed town inside Portuguese ramparts, where artists paint murals on the walls every summer. Sunset from the walls over the ocean. Night in Asilah.
Day 6Asilah – Tangier, departure
Asilah – Tangier, departure
A morning walk in Asilah, then the short drive to Tangier airport, the port or your hotel, where the journey ends.

Questions about this journey
Is the Mediterranean warmer than the Atlantic?
Yes. In July and August the water around Al Hoceima is usually 22 to 25°C, warmer and calmer than the Atlantic, which is why Moroccan families love it in summer.
Can we add Chefchaouen?
Yes. The blue town is about an hour from Tetouan, so we can add a night there. Ask us and we update the route.
When is the best time for a coastal tour?
From May to October for warm, dry days. The Atlantic stays fresh even in summer, around 18 to 22°C in the water, and the trade winds keep the coast much cooler than Marrakech. The south coast around Taghazout and Mirleft is mild all year, so these journeys also work well from November to April.
Can we swim everywhere?
Not everywhere. The Atlantic has strong currents on some beaches, so your driver-guide will show you the safe, sheltered spots, and lifeguards work on the main town beaches in summer.
Can we add the Sahara or the mountains?
Yes. Every journey is private, so we can add a desert night, a day in the Atlas or extra nights by the sea. Tell us what you would like and we send you a new route and price.
How is the price calculated?
Your car and driver-guide cost the same for 2 or 6 people, and we book one double or twin room for every two travellers, so the price per person drops as your group grows. Travelling alone or with an odd number? Ask us for your exact price.
