10-Day Morocco Tour from Fes: Imperial Cities, Chefchaouen and the Coast
Ten days for travellers who would rather spend time in medinas, palaces and coastal towns than in the car to the Sahara. Two nights in Fes, two in Chefchaouen, Rabat, Casablanca, three nights in Marrakech and one in Essaouira.
Best for: Culture lovers who prefer cities and the coast to the desert.
Highlights
- Two nights in Fes with a guided day
- Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes
- Two nights in Chefchaouen
- Asilah and Rabat
- Hassan II Mosque
- Marrakech and Essaouira
Day by day
Day 1Arrival in Fes
Welcome at Fes airport or station and transfer to your riad in the medina. Evening walk to a rooftop for the call to prayer over the old city.
Day 2Fes guided day
A full day in Fes el-Bali, the largest car-free medina in the world, with an official local guide. Bou Inania madrasa, the Al Quaraouiyine mosque and university founded in 859, the Nejjarine fountain, the Chouara tanneries seen from a leather-shop terrace, and the golden gates of the Royal Palace. Free time in the souks before dinner.
Day 3Fes – Volubilis – Moulay Idriss – Meknes – Chefchaouen
Meknes, the Roman city of Volubilis and the holy town of Moulay Idriss, then north into the Rif to Chefchaouen.
Day 4Chefchaouen at leisure
A free day, or the walk to the Akchour waterfalls.
Day 5Chefchaouen – Asilah – Rabat
To the Atlantic at Asilah, then down the coast to Rabat.
Day 6Rabat – Casablanca – Marrakech
Morning in Rabat, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, then south to Marrakech.
Day 7Marrakech guided day
A morning with an official local guide: the Koutoubia minaret, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the souks of the medina. The afternoon is yours, perhaps the Majorelle Garden or a hammam, before the storytellers and food stalls of Jemaa el-Fna come alive at dusk.
Day 8Marrakech – argan country – Essaouira
West across the plains to the Atlantic, through argan forests where goats sometimes climb the trees. Essaouira is a white-and-blue fortified port with a gentle pace: walk the Skala ramparts, the art galleries and the fishing harbour, and eat grilled fish by the boats.
Day 9Essaouira – Marrakech
A free morning by the sea, then back to Marrakech.
Day 10Marrakech at leisure and departure
A free morning and transfer to the airport.
